The Atom LL 1 Team travelled to Stayner for a weekend Tournament December 11 and 12th. It was a two day points Tournament hosting both Atom and Pee Wee Local League Teams with each Team playing a minimum of three games. With solid success being achieved in their season so far, this Tournament provided the Atom Mad Dogs with a chance to test their play and skill set against a new set of Teams.
The Mad Dogs were placed into a grouping which had them play Kingsview ( Oshawa ), the local Stayner #1 Atom team and Barrie Colts. After starting the Tournament with a hard fought 2- 2 tie against Kingsview, they finished up Saturday with a strong game against Stayner #1 winning 3 – 0. The second game didn’t start till 6:00 pm which meant that most didn’t get back home till after 9:00 pm. Sunday’s 11:00 am game against Barrie meant an early start for everyone communting. The Barrie Colts were a good skating team with strong goaltending but the Mad Dogs played their characteristic strong offensive passing game and were rewarded with a goal in the second and 3 goals in the third period. Barrie played hard and were able to notch a couple goals but Owen and Bailey stood tall and denied some good scoring chances by Barrie. When the Buzzer sounded, Minto took the game by a score of 4 – 2 and earning a chance to play for the Tournament Championship later Sunday Afternoon. After a great lunch at Boston Pizza and some downtime away from the arena, the Mad Dogs were fully recharged to take on the Stayner # 2 Atom Team for the Championship. The Stayner # 2 team were undefeated so far in 2010 but so were the Mad Dogs so this was shaping up to be a great match. Minto scored the only goal in the first period when Kaleb Irvin scored unassisted after an end to end rush. Kaleb notched his second unassisted goal at the 5:00 minute mark of the second period to put the Mad Dogs up 2 – 0. Stayner responded at the 2:30 mark of the second with their first goal and the second period ended with Minto holding a 2 – 1 lead. Both Teams gave everything they had in the third, play was back and forth . Kaleb Irvin notched his 3rd goal of the game at the 4:30 mark of the third go give Minto a small cushion and a 3 – 1 lead. Stayner never let up and rushed the Minto net till the buzzer sounded. The Minto Mad Dogs were the Champions of the 2010 – 2011 Stayner Tournament. They were each awarded with a drinking Cup, Stayner Minor Hockey Dog Tag ( how appropriate ) and a beautiful Trophy to take back home and proudly display in our Trophy cases so please check it out when your at the area.
Kaleb Irvin led the scoring with 7 goals and 2 assists over the four games, Bryce Williams notched 2 goals and 2 assists, Ryan Helmka scored 1, Noah Aitken scored 1 and assisted 1, Ian Jamieson scored 1 and had 2 assists, Ryan Litt and Brandon Woodroffe each had 1 assist. The most goals post and crossbar hits went to Ryan Litt.
