U18R Brings home the Gold!
The Minto Mad Dogs U18R team travelled to Gravenhurst on October 21-23 to participate in the Matt Kelley Memorial tournament.
Game 1 saw the Mad Dogs pitted against the Huntsville Otters where we set the tone for the tournament and skated to a 4-1 victory, a score which does not tell the story of Minto's dominance.
Game 2 came early Saturday morning versus local rivals South Bruce. Minto again was the far better team, rewarded with a 5-1 win.
Game 3 on Saturday afternoon was more of the same, with the Dogs overpowering the Delhi Rockets by a score of 5-2. Going 3-0 in the round robin locked up first place in our group, and setup a matchup with Tavistock.
That game was on Sunday morning, and saw Tavistock take an early 1-0 lead. This game was an intense, physical battle with both teams evenly matched. Heading into the 3rd period still down 1-0, the Dogs dug deep knowing that only 15 minutes remained to extend the tournament. 3 quick goals mid-way through the period gave the boys breathing room; however, Tavistock made thing interesting with a late goal to draw within 1 with 3:15 remaining. The Dogs retained their composure, and hung on for a hard fought 3-2 victory to advance to the finals.
The Final on Sunday afternoon saw a rematch with South Bruce, and the outcome was never in doubt as we brought home the gold with a convincing 6-1 pasting of the Blades.
Great job by the boys, the coaching staff, and all the parents who make it all happen.
Looking forward to a great season!
