The atom reps travelled to Aylmer this past weekend to play in a tournament hosted by the Aylmer Flames. The Mad Dogs worked very hard, played with a ‘team first’ attitude and came home champions of their first tournament of the year.
Game #1
The first game on Friday night was played against the Orono Leafs. Minto jumped out to a two goal lead by the end of the first period on goals by Reid Lobsinger and Tyson Koopman. Orono would score two goals of their own in the second period to tie the game at two heading into the third period. Near the end of a tight checking third period, Lucus Oxford would score with only 1:44 remaining to give Minto the lead (3-2) which they would hold onto. Drew Richardson had a great game in net stopping many chances by the Leafs. Assists also went to Logan Wanless, Brett Zabel, Parker Miller and Reid Lobsinger. Logan Wanless had an excellent defensive game, stopping many would be scoring chances and picked up the player of the game award.
Game #2
Game two was played very early Saturday morning against the home town Flames. Minto would once again score the first goal of the game on a shot by Reid Lobsinger set up by Parker Miller. Aylmer would tie the game 1-1 in the second period. Minto once again enter a third period in a tie game. The game would remain tied until 2:54 left in the game when Parker Miller would score on a pass from Lucas Oxford. Trevor Scott would shut the door in net giving Minto their second win of the tournament. Brodie Hoffele played an excellent all around game in both ends of the ice giving him player of the game honors.
Game #3
On Saturday afternoon, the Mad Dogs faced off against the Langton Leafs. Minto came out of the gate very strong and were able to score three goals in the first period. Minto did not back off in the second period scoring just 10 seconds in and adding two more before the end of the second. Langton and Minto both scored in the third period with the final being 7-1. Goals were scored by Brett Zabel (2), Brodie Hoffele (2), Parker Miller (2) and Lucas Oxford. Assists went to Brett Zabel (2), Cody Camm (2), Paker Miller, Leah Herrfort, Tyson Koopman, Reid Lobsinger and Logan Wanless. Excellent forechecking and strong defensive play allowed Langton to register only a handful of shots on net. Parker Miller was the player of the game with a three point effort and setting up his linemates with multiple scoring opportunities.
Game #4
The championship game was played Sunday afternoon and Minto would once again face off against the Langton Leafs. The Leafs seemed more determined on Sunday and held Minto to a one goal (3-2) lead half way through the game. Minto would score one more before the end of the second and go into the third period with a 4-2 lead. Our Minto team would put the game away in the third by scoring three more goals to make the final score 7-2. Goals were scored by Brodie Hoffele (2), Parker Miller (2), Brett Zabel, Leah Herrfort and Tyson Koopman. Assists went to Brodie Hoffele (3), Brett Zabel (3),Tyson Koopman, Cody Camm and Logan Wanless. Brett Zabel’s excellent forechecking earned him the player of the game award.
